💕 Why You'll Love This Recipe
If you’re following the Candida diet, you know that sugary treats are a big no-no. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up chocolate entirely! This sugar-free hot chocolate is the perfect way to satisfy your sweet cravings without any of the sugar.
I found this hot chocolate recipe so helpful in the early stages of the diet when I was adapting to less sweetness in my meals. It was great that I could still enjoy something sweet and chocolatey without breaking the diet.
Plus, while I was also adjusting to less carbohydrates in my meals, this hot chocolate helped to satisfy the need for something warm, filling, and indulgent during the 3pm slump, or for those evenings spent on the sofa.
So next time you’re feeling those chocolate cravings come on, make yourself a cup of this sugar-free hot chocolate. You won’t be disappointed!
💚 Why Add Spirulina to Your Hot Chocolate?
One of the wonderful components of this hot chocolate recipe is the addition of spirulina powder.
Spirulina is a superfood that has been around for centuries. It's a type of blue-green algae that is packed with nutrients and has a host of health benefits.
One of the supposed benefits of Spirulina are its antimicrobial properties against microorganisms - including various species of Candida.
Other potential benefits of spirulina include:
- Boosting energy levels
- Improving allergy symptoms
- Lowering cholesterol
- Anti-oxidant effects
Spirulina is available in powder or capsule form, and can be added to smoothies, juices, or taken on its own. So if you're looking for a nutritious way to boost your health, spirulina is a great option.
So why not try adding a small amount to your sugar free hot chocolate - you will benefit from an extra dose of nutrients, and I promise you won’t even taste it!
🍫 Recipe Adjustments
The ratios in this recipe are exactly to my own personal taste (post Candida Diet). It’s sweet without being too sickly, chocolatey without being overpowering, and has enough coconut milk to feel creamy without being too heavy.
Of course, our tastes are all different, so feel free to experiment with the ratios to find the one you like.
Do you prefer a more intense chocolate flavour? Increase the cacao powder from 1.5 teaspoon to 2 tsp.
Need a bit more sweetness? Increase the xylitol to start with. You can then reduce this gradually as you become accustomed to less sweet flavours throughout the course of the diet.
I find that this quantity of spirulina is just the right amount to not impact the flavour of the hot chocolate. You may want to increase or decrease this amount depending on your tolerance for bitter flavours!
💫 Substitutions
To keep this hot chocolate dairy-free and Candida Diet friendly, I have used coconut milk.
How to Make Coconut Milk at Home With Desiccated Coconut
Coconut in all its forms is fantastic on the Candida Diet, due to its naturally anti-fungal properties. So, this recipe is a great way of adding more coconut to diet.
If you are not a fan of coconut milk, or you don’t have any on hand, you can substitute for oat milk. I recommend coconut and oat over almond or hemp milk as they have a slightly higher fat content, resulting in a creamier, more indulgent texture.
☕ Top Tips
Because this homemade hot chocolate does not contain any emulsifiers, it may separate slightly in the mug as you sip. Therefore, my advice is to keep a teaspoon handy and sporadically restir your hot chocolate so that it remains well combined. Otherwise, you may end up leaving all the flavour until the last mouthful!
Also if you prepare smaller portions of the powdered ingredients in advance by storing them in small containers, you can have a serving ready in time for your next chocolate craving!
And finally, the milk-frother is completely optional!
