🍎 What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is the product of fermenting apples using bacteria. The sugar from the apple is first converted to alcohol in the same way you would do to make cider. And then the alcohol is fermented to form acetic acid - the main component of vinegar.

Other constituents of the vinegar include vitamins, mineral salts, amino acids, polyphenols (anti-oxidants) and non-volatile organic acids.

🦠 Can Apple Cider Vinegar Treat Candida Overgrowth?

One of the main benefits of apple cider vinegar regarding the treatment of Candida is the fact it is antimicrobial and antifungal. Lab tests revealed that apple cider vinegar has strong antimicrobial effect against the pathogens E. coli, Candida albicans (the species of fungus associated with candida yeast infections) and Staphylococcus aureu.

In fact, an in vitro study demonstrated that application of apple cider vinegar successfully inhibited several of the key enzymes needed for Candida to metabolise. This shows good evidence to support apple cider vinegar's antifungal properties.

Plus, in addition to the antifungal and antimicrobial properties, apple cider vinegar may even improve the general condition of the gastrointestinal tract. Apple cider vinegar can improve both the digestion of food and the absorption of minerals (study conducted on swine).

✨ Other Health Benefits

As well as being useful for the treatment of Candida overgrowth, apple cider vinegar has a number of other benefits, including:

Anti-Obesity

Apple cider vinegar is often promoted by the diet and weight-loss industry. This is because Apple cider vinegar can improve metabolism as well as improve satiety and suppress appetite.

Anti-Diabetic

Apple cider vinegar also stabilises blood sugar levels by reducing the concentration of glucose and insulin in the blood - especially after meals high in carbohydrates.

Anti-Hypertensive

Apple cider vinegar can help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, benefiting those suffering with high cholesterol and diabetes. Studies found that apple cider vinegar consumption decreased cholesterol, fasting plasma glucose as well as blood sugar levels.

Anti-Oxidant

Apple cider vinegar is a known dietary source of polyphenols. Polyphenols are compounds synthesized by plants to defend against oxidative stress. When we consume polyphenols, we increase antioxidant protection, thus reducing the related damage to internal organs and likelihood of associated diseases.

Anti-Tumor Effect

Apple cider vinegar may even reduce cancer risk by inhibiting the proliferation of human cancer cells.

💭 Final Thoughts

From the clinical studies undertaken thus far on both humans and animals, there appears to be a lot of promise regarding apple cider vinegar and its related health benefits. However, more long-term clinical studies would certainly be worthwhile.

With that said, taking apple cider vinegar diluted in low doses is a low-risk, natural remedy for a number of health conditions. This includes a candida overgrowth, thanks to the natural anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties.

Try taking it for a couple of months to see how you feel. If you find it benefits you, and helps with any of the symptoms that you are experiencing, then continue taking it throughout your healing journey.
